The larvae are easily identified by their dark brown head due to the hardened prothoracic shield, while the adult moth is small, dark brown, and measures about 12–20 mm across the wings. The pest has a complex life cycle, with eggs laid on leaves, buds, flowers, or developing bolls. Larval development lasts 9–14 days in warm conditions, after which they either pupate quickly or enter a dormant stage (diapause) depending on regional climate. The total life cycle is completed within 3–6 weeks, often with overlapping generations. Larvae cause significant damage by feeding inside flower buds and bolls, destroying developing seeds and affecting crop yield and quality. Severe infestations may result in multiple larvae within a single boll.
