The lure attracts adult moths into the trap, helping farmers detect pest presence early and take timely control measures to minimize crop losses and improve yield quality.

Identification

The adult moth has white forewings with light to dark brown markings and a distinctive orange to dark brown L-shaped or triangular spot near the center. The forewing length ranges from 8.5–10.5 mm in males and 9.5–12 mm in females. The hind wings are white with faint markings. The larvae are pink in color with a brown head, stout body, and small wart-like structures bearing hairs. Fully grown larvae are clearly visible inside plant parts.

Life Cycle

The female moth lays around 250 eggs, which hatch within 3–5 days. The young larvae immediately bore into tender plant parts such as shoots, flowers, or fruits. After passing through five growth stages, the larvae become fully developed within 10–15 days. Mature larvae come out and pupate on plant surfaces or among fallen leaves. Adult moths live for 2–5 days, and the complete life cycle is completed in 21–43 days. Multiple overlapping generations occur throughout the year, while larvae may survive in soil during colder periods.

Nature of Damage

The larvae are internal feeders and cause serious damage by boring into shoots, flowers, and fruits. After entering, they block the entry hole with excreta. Damaged shoots wilt, dry, and eventually drop off, which reduces plant growth and delays crop maturity. Infestation in flowers prevents fruit formation, while damage in fruits leads to internal tunneling filled with waste material (frass), making the fruits unmarketable. Yield losses can be significant depending on the level of infestation.
